Flanged tips are optional and are intended to prevent tissue grab by drawing air over the flange and into the side eyes to create a cushion of air to prevent the tip from contacting the walls of the airway. The flange is slightly larger than the shaft of the catheter, therefore the effective carrier size is increased at this location.
